Portrait of Place : Harvey Milk Terminal 1, SFO
For the past three years, since graduating from Pratt, I’ve been working on the San Francisco Airport’s Harvey Milk Terminal project with the rest of my teammates at Gensler. I feel incredibly grateful to have worked on this project right out of school. The project was already underway prior to me starting as a Designer on the team, so construction was about to begin when I joined.
Once I began going on site walks and visiting the site while under construction, I started to document the process. One of my favorite aspects of my job is being able to see through the walls, ceiling, stairs, etc. to see how something is constructed. It’s rare to experience a space, especially an airport, in progress and I wanted to document the experience to share with others that might be interested and remind myself of the stages of construction. I was so inspired by the colors, lines, patterns, etc. that occurred in spaces around me during the construction process.
The images are laid out in chronological order, starting at the beginning of 2023 to a few weeks after opening day, in June 2024. After laying out the photos, it was cool for me to see the progression from abstract colors and forms in space to a fully fleshed out airport come to life.
On to Terminal 3 West!
